At this time there are dozens of family trees posted on the internet, which include Johannes Fankhauser, b. 29 Aug. 1692, and Barbara Habegger, b.1694 (sometimes listed as Barbara Habegger II) as parents of Jacob, Johannes and Christian Fankhauser, the three pioneer ancestors of the Funkhouser families, who were in Virginia by 1737. This information first appeared in Frieda Wilson's book "FUNKHOUSER: A Swiss American Genealogy" (1978). More recent research in Swiss records has failed to turn up a single document that mentions this couple or their children. There was a Hans Fankhauser, born to Christian Fankhauser, an Anabaptist, and his wife, Barbara Habegger and baptized 29 October, 1692, but all the evidence is that this child died before reaching adulthood. There is no record of a Barbara Habegger being born to Hans Habegger and wife, Lucia Fankhauser, nor of any marriage for a Hans Fankhauser to a Barbara Habegger, or children born to such a couple. All the evidence now available, including DNA evidence, and various documents is that Jacob Fankhouser (Jacob Funhouser Sr.) one of the three Funkhouser pioneers in Virginia by 1737, was not a brother of Johannes and Christian, the other two Funkhousers in Virginia by that time. In fact he was already at least 21 years old and living in what is now Lancaster County by 1724.The Johannes, who arrived in the "Mortonhouse" in August, 1728, is almost certainly the Johannes Fankhauser (John Funkhouser Sr) who died in 1765, and is not the father of the immigrants. My own proposal that he could be a Hans Fankhauser, born in 1699 to Christian and Magdalena Fankhauser, who emigrated to Alsace by 1709, should now also be discounted, since there is no evidence that this Hans survived childhood. There are any number of other Hans Fankhausers who could be the 1728 immigrant. The name Jacob was rarely used and there are no Jacobs in existing Swiss records who could be the one in Pennsylvania by 1724. DNA evidence does clearly establishes the fact that the Funkhousers of Virginia are descendants of the Fankhauser family that originated at Trub in the Emmenthal Valley of Bern, Switzerland. HOWEVER, at this point, any claim by descendants of John Funkhouser Sr. Jacob Funkhouser Sr. or Christian Funkhouser, the early Funkhouser pioneers in Virginia,to specific Swiss ancestors, is spurious and without sufficient documentation, no matter how many times you find it posted on the internet!!
