Gagels in the US and Russia
Two points of interest:
1. I found 2 Gagels who served in Maryland during the Civil War, and one who pledged allegiance to the King of England when he arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1700s. I saw the German town of origin of some other very
early Gagel arrivals to the U.S.; I'll check to see if they also came from northern Bavaria, as Robert Gagel indicates.
2. The name Gagel appears in the Dictionary of Jewish Surnames of the Russian Empire. Could there be a migratory connection?
One question: Why is there such a large concentration of Gagels in Kentucky?
Finally, my great granfather was Frederick Gagel, who arrived from Germany in 1898 and owned a fur-dyeing business in Manhattan. His children were: Otto, Fred, Charlotte, Margaret and Emil.
