Re: 17th Century Gaines Family of Virginia, A Review of the Records
I didn't take any offense by your post, I simply stated that I had copies of some of the records that you referenced. On page 51 of GFCV, Sutherd shows Elizabeth Gaines, daughter of James Gaines, as the second wife of John Catlett, Jr. My post addressed the inconsistencies with the relationship between Elizabeth and James Gaines and the birth date provided for her by Sutherd.
I have not done a great deal of research on the Catlett family, however, the fact that John Catlett, Jr. had a wife named Mary in 1706 does not preclude him from having previously been married to a woman named Elizabeth. Given the high mortality rates in Virginia at that time, multiple marriages were common. All of the dates that I have for the children of John Catlett, Jr. are before 1703, so it is possible that his wife in 1706, Mary, may have been a step-mother to the children. However, since you have investigated this matter more thoroughly than I have, I will defer to your conclusions.
FYI, the James Madison family tree is available on the internet at
