Re: 17th Century Gaines Family of Virginia, A Review of the Records
In my opinion, Mr. Sutherd did a fairly good job of preparing a history of the Gaines family descendants, starting in the 18th century. For that, we should all be grateful. The areas where I disagree with his material are where he speculated about family connections between men with similar surnames in 18th century Virginia based on very limited court records. This seems to be a common pattern in many family histories. Some professional genealogy researchers refer to this as the "three brothers story," in that many people of similar surnames are simply lumped together as brothers and/or cousins without a shred of evidence.
You asked about a marriage between Mildred Gaines and William Menefee, but you didn't specify a time period or location. I don't have a record of this marriage, however, there was at least one marriage between a Menefee and a Gaines, I believe in Rappahannock or Shenandoah county.
