Hi, Lorraine:
I haven't worked on my William Gammill/Ann McGaughey line for quite a while either, but was recently contacted by two descendants of their daughter, Margaret Gammill (m. [1] John Walden; [2] James Crawford) and went back to review my files.I've relied on "The Gammill Family" by John S. Gammill for the basic framework of my GAMMILL research, but have gone a little further on my own.
William Gammill's LW&T identifies a son named James Gammill, so this son was alive as late as 16 Aug 1847.The son, James Gammill, was not in the Oct 1830 Gammill party which migrated to Coles Co, IL from Bedford Co, TN, but neiter were William Jr, Margaret (m. Walden & Crawford) or Jane (m. Morton). The John S. Gammill book says that nothing further is known of this son, James.The following may be rambling, but I do think there is 'a' possibility that your James Gammill b. 30 Sept 1797 was a son of William Gammill/Ann McGaughery.
William Gammill (Ann McGaughey) were in Blount Co, TN in 1797, but were in Bedford 'by' 1820 and I think a great deal earlier.John S. Gammill indicates that this William Gammill (Ann McGaughey) was in Davidson Co, TN in 1798 purchasing land from Ebenezer Alexander and another purchase from the same man in 1805.I have not verified those two deeds, but I have found an 1803 Petition to form Rutherford Co, TN (out of Davidson & Williamson counties) with 'a' William Gamble (common variation of Gammill that I'm sure you've run across). Bedford was later carved out of Rutherford. John S. Gammill says that William Gammill purchased land on Sugar Creek in Bedford in 1818.That deed is NOT recorded in "Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford Co, TN" by Timothy & Helen Marsh, but I believe this to be a true statement because of where his son, William Gammill Jr (m. Eleanor Parkes) lived. [Wm. Jr did NOT migrate to Coles Co, IL, but continued to live on land originally owned by his father.]
When I was reviewing notes over the last few weeks, I did an 'analysis' of the 1820 Bedford Co, TN census record for William Gammill, because I realized I had never done so to see if it fit his 'known' family.[Children named in his 1847 LW&T were: (in this order) Elizabeth 'Betsy'(m. Balch); William [Jr]; Andrew; Margaret 'Peggy' (m. Crawford); James; heirs of Jane, dec'd (m. Unknown Morton); Mary 'Polly' (m. Isaac Odell); Martha (m. John J. Adams);Samuel K.Here is the 1820 analysis:
1820>TENNESSEE>Bedford>No TwpM33_122Page 12
William Gammel1 m <10; 1 m 16-18; 1 m 16-26; 2 m 26-45; 3 f <10; 2 f 10-16; 1 f 26-45
Analysis:[* means birth date verified, usually by tombstone]
1 m <10.......Samuel, b. 17 Sept 1816*, age 4
1 m 16-18.....Andrew, b. 9 Apr 1803*, age 17
1 m 16-26.....William Jr., b. 10 Oct 1801*, age 19
2 m 26-45.....William Sr, b. 30 Apr 1868*, age 52;
..............Unknown male, b. bet 1775-1794
3 f <10.......Mary, b. 22 Mar 1811*, age 9;
..............Martha, b.1812*,age 8, Jane, b. c1813, age 7
2 f 10-16.....Elizabeth, b. 1 Jan 1800*, age 20;
..............Margaret, b. 1807*, age 13
1 f 26-45.....Ann (McGaughey), b. 24 Sep 1774*, age 46
Both William Gammill & Ann (McGaughey) Gammill's ages are slightly miss-reported on this census.I do NOT know Jane (Gammill) Morton's age, so c1813 is 'my' estimate.I do NOT know who the unknown male, 26-45 was.But it seems remarkable to me that the 'known' son, James Gammill is NOT in this h/h in 1820.I have always 'slotted' James Gammill into the birth order shown in William's 1847 LW&T and have previously estimated his birth as ca 1807.If that was true, he definitely SHOULD be in this census record.BUT, if 'your' James Gammill, born 30 Sep 1797, was a son, he would be 23 in 1820 and could 'fit' the Unknown male 26-45, although admittedly slightly miss-reported. This may be a 'stretch', I readily admit.
Andrew Gammill did marry Jane Whities on 19 Aug 1823 in Bedford, according to John S. Gammill. I've not found that marriage record, but early Bedford marriages are not easily found.A ca 1880 History of Moultrie Co, IL biographical sketch of Samuel Finley Gammill, son of Andrew Gammill/Jane Whites/Whities verifies her surname and says the following:
"and was married in that state to Jane Whites, who was born in South Carolina, and was carried from that state to Shelby county, Tennessee, on horseback, when two years old."
However, Jane (Whities) Gammill is reported as born in North Carolina on the 1850 & 1860 census. There are other slight mistakes in the bio sketch.I record her birth as ca 1802/05 North Carolina.I don't know how that fits with Sarah 'Sally' White.
This is all very little to go on.I don't have anything to verify that your James Gammill/Sarah White belonged to William Gammill/Ann McGaughey.
I'm sure your research found, Aaron Gambill, an 'early' Bedford settler.Gambill 'can' be a variation of GAMMILL. Given the name of your grandfather, Charles Newton Gammill, it may be significant that Aaron Gambill had children named: Newton C. Gambill; James C. Gambill, B.(poss Benjamin) Gambill; Aaron Gambill; Susanna (m. Jesse Muse); Ellena (m. James Ellis), Thomas J. Gambill.I don't know if you were able to eliminate this family or not.
You can write me at [email protected] if you want to discuss this some more.
