Hi Stephanie, I really do not know if my Joseph Gareau is the father to your Joseph Garrow, although I have two sons for mine that I have never been able to find since their birth. They are Jean Baptiste Arsene born in 1847 and Paul Joseph born in 1854. Neither of them seem to show up in Ogdensburg with the rest of the family, nor have I found any of them in Vermont either.
My biggest problem with this family is that they moved about from Quebec to Ontario on a whim and whenever he felt like it he used St Onge or Gareau on many church records. His wife Louise did the same, sometimes using Monette and other were Boismenu, what a pain.
It was not until they arrived in Ogdensburg and the census takers, who were not allowed by law to ask a spelling of a name, did the name change to Garrow or Gorrow, spelled phonetically.
To add more trouble they always seemed to use Joseph, and whether you have come across it by now or not, all children were named Joseph and Marie and later went on to use their middle names.I have only one record of my Joseph being anything other than Joseph and that is when he is buried in 1887 under the name Louis.
Have you found out where your Gareau/Garrow family is from in Quebec or Ontario exactly? Let me know what else you have on them, this would be interesting to explore.
Kristin
