Does anyone have any verifiable information as to the birth date of Joseph Gartrell? From a Montgomery Co Md tax list in 1777 he is listed as a taxable. He had to be sixteen or older to be on this tax list. From the Oath of Fidelity he took in 1778 he had to be 18. From his father Johns Will in 1761 he is to be a free man at 18 so not 18 in 1761. I have seen on this forum a birth date as early as 1740. Also there is a manuscript in the Library of Congress The Gartrells 1540 to 2000 by William J Gartrell. He gives the birth date as 1753.
Also arelated scrap of information that I came across in Anne Arundel County Maryland Marriage References by Peden Rachel Gartrell widow of Jon Gartrell is married to Benjamin Griffith by 1773. This is proved by some records in the Abstracts of the Administration Accounts of the Prerogative Court of Maryland. Joseph Gartrell buys some livestock from Benjamin Griffith in 1780 and is witness to a deed between John Ray and Charles Penn Aug 1780. So any help or suggestions from any of the long time Gartrell researchers out there would be appreciated. I am still looking for clues as to the first wife of Joseph.
