Who is Nathan SB Gates b. 1819 NY, prob. Whitestown?

By Catharine MacMillan August 12, 2013 at 03:51:37

Trying to sort out the numerous Nathan Gates' in central NY early to mid 1800's.
I descend from the oldest of them, Nathan Sexton Gates, b. 1884 East Haddam, CT, through his oldest child, a son Eliphaz B. b. 1807 East Haddam. When he was about 10 (1817) Nathan moved to Whitestown, NY where he appears in the 1820 census, with appropriate tallies for Eliphaz and a sister Mary Anable b. 1811 CT (m. Amos Hull Thomas) and several other children, including both a son and a daughter b. bet 1810 and 1820. In 1830, Nathan and wife Betsey Burnham had a daughter Eliza. (m. Freeman Corbett).

Some have suggested the unidentified daughter in census is Abigail Jane b. 1814 CT (m. Almon White Harris)

In the 1892 New York state census, Freeman Corbett and his wife Eliza have their son with them, but also Nathan SB Gates b. 1819 NY.

This Nathan SB Gates b. 1819 NY is found in City of Utica Directories (always as Nathan SB Gates) as early as 1860 and 1861. Next we find a Nathan SB Gates in Civil War draft registration papers from Lockport, NY in 1863, b. 1819, as expected. He does not appear in Utica City Directories again until 1868, but then does yearly until 1889.

He is found as just Nathan in US censuses 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. His wife Jane ? is with him, and first a son, Charles H. b.1846 and later a daughter Helen b. 1861. Helen is called Nellie in the City Directories, is a milliner, and lives with her parents. If or when Nellie married is not known. By 1870 son Charles H. is married to Jennie, and by 1900 they live in Jackson, MI, with their son, also Charles H., divorced, and his son Grant.

From the draft registration and city directories we know Nathan SB worked for Western Union as a telegraph operator. In the 1870 census, son Charles H is also a telegraph operator.

This Nathan is about 10 years older than 3 other Nathans found in the area in Censuses. None of these 3, all b. about 1810 NY can be the son of Nathan Sexton Gates and Betsey Burnham for they lived in CT until 1817, and parents are known for 2 of the three. Nathan SB could however be their son ... b. 1819 NY and found living with their daughter Eliza and her family in the 1892 State Census.

I found it interesting that Nathan SB's son was Charles and daughter Helen A.
Nathan and Betsey's daughter Mary Anable (possibly Nathan SB's sister) named a son Charles and a daughter Helen as well.

Can anyone add information or insight to the identity of Nathan SB Gates?
Thank you.
