Re: Dudley Gatewood
Dudley Gatewood (1747-1836) lived just south of Danville, Virginia in the area still called Gatewood, North Carolina. The old Dudley Gatewood house where Pres. George Washington spent the night of June 3, 1791 was moved to Hillsborough, North Carolina near Interstate 85 in the 1970s.The Casa Ibarra Mexican Restaurant in the Daniel Boone Village, owned by George Irarra, is located in the historic old house.
The Gatewood property in Caswell County seems to have been handed down. The old house is drawn on an 1890 map alond "Dix' Ferry Road" near the Virginia line when the tract is 760 acres. It seems that this Dudley would have been buried here. The Dudley Gatewood who died in 1836 had nine children by his first wife Elizabeth Dix.He had ten step-children when he married Rebecca Wynne, widow of Stith Wynne. The 1803 marriage to Temperance Worsham in Pittsylvania County, Virginia may have been another Dudley, especially if he live in and is buried in Stokes County and had 11 or 12 more children.Do you know where this Dudley is buried?
Take a look at these April 2, 2007 pictures of the Gatewood house:
