I came across this information too during my research. I believe that Josephine may have been the daughter of George and Henrietta Gatling of Northampton County. I believe that Josephine had a twin named William (Billy) Gatling. Josephine's father George Gatling was formerly known as George Peebles in the 1870 census.I suspect that he was the former slave of John T. Peebles and Rebecca Peebles (daughter of Thomas Barnes Gatling and Rebecca M. Gatling of Northampton County, NC); further, I suspect that George Gatling was the original property of Thomas Barnes Gatling and his wife Rebecca.Perhaps when Thomas died, he willed George as property to his wife or his daughter.I think that George took on the name Peebles perhaps after slavery ended, but changed his surname to Gatling sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census. This is my hypothesis anyway. I am looking for information on John (Jno.)T. Peebles and Thomas Barnes Gatling. Hope this helps! By the way, may I ask what is your friend's name?
