Hi Kit,
I believe your ggrandfather Michael Francis Gaul may have been the son of William Gaul and my great aunt Mary Franey Gaul. Mary and William Gaul had 5 children. Jim (never married), Will, John, Mike and Johanna.I just found Mary Franey Gaul living with her son Jim in the 1920 census. She was 79 and he was 54. Johanna Gaul came to Wisconsin to visit my great grandmother Ellen and married Frank McGuire. I am not sure where they settled.I have a picture of my great grandmother and her 3 daughers.Their is a 4th girl in the picture and it must be Johanna. Will Gaul married Alice Whalen and had 12 children. I also noticed in the 1920 census that Jim was born in New York.I do not think that Mary and William ever lived in Wisconsin. As far as I know my great grandmother Ellen came almost immediately to Wisconsin. I was told that my great grandmother Ellen Franey and her sisters Mary and Bridget came from Kilkenny seven miles from New Ross.Their father was a tailor and their mother's maiden name was Reed.I recently found the name of their father on Bridget's marriage record.Their father's name was Michael Franey.I have found some Michael Franeys in Griffiths Valuation in that area.It does not seem to be a common name so I am somewhat hopeful that I will someday pin down exactly where they came from in Kilkenny.I notice that twins seem to run in the Gaul family. My cousins, descendents of Will Gaul and Alice are twins and their mother was as well.Rose
