Comer - Gaumer Relationship
Hello
I've been helping a friend with his genealogy and we were kind of stuck on a Comer. We were trying to find the original immigrant that came to America.Lo and behold we ran across a Johann Abram Comer.Born in 1721 in Palatinate Germany married to a Margaret Unknown born 1723.We show a son Philip - b. About 1757 in Shenahdoah County, Virginia. This is too much of a coincidence. Here is some information - Philip Comer married 4 December 1781 (date of bond) Shenandoah County, Elizabeth Wise, daughter of Michael Wise. Philip and Elizabeth Comer signed a deed in 1800 dealing with her father's
estate (Reference: Gilreath, Pages 122-123). Michael Wise purchased 237 acres of land from Henry and Mary Pence (Frederick County Deed Book 15, Page 181), located on the Little Hawksbill on 17 July 1771 (Reference: The Hawksbill Pence Families, Page 18, unpublished in October 1997, by Richard A. Pence, 3211 Adams Court, Fairfax, Virginia 22030). Philip Comer, will dated 15 May 1823 was proven in Champaign County, Ohio in 1826. Estate was also dealt with in Champaign County Chancery Record Book 9, Page 223, filed 7 March 1826. The History of Champaign County, Ohio (Pages 443-444) relates that P@i ip Comer went to Champaign County in 1808, purchased his land, planted his crop of corn and returned to Virginia in the fall of 1809. While he was living in Ohio he was residing at the home of Peter Smith near Westville, who married Christina Comer, daughter of Martin Comer. In 1810 Philip moved his family into Champaign County and stayed for a few nights with the family of Adam Kite. The only possible relationship that can be located at this time is that Adam Kite was the son of William Kite and Catharine Smith, who may have been a sister of Peter Smith. Also, John Kite, brother of Adam, married Sarah Ann Koiner; the surname may have been "Comer." Philip Comer was not listed in the 1810 tax list of Champaign County, however, it has recently come to light that there may have been a moratorium for taxes on land purchased in the early part of the 1800s. The families of: Philip Comer, Joseph Kiser and Samuel Brubaker were located in the 1810 census of Shenandoah County, Virginia. It is not known how many times that Philip was married. His last wife, whom he married on 25 November 1819 in Champaign County, was Catharine Metz.
Is there a connection between Comer and Gaumer?
