Hi Robert,

I, too, have GAYNOR relatives from Vinton County, Ohio. Mary GAYNOR, b 1814, married James MURPHY in Ireland, and they settled in Vinton County on land that is referred to as Irish Ridge, near Lake Hope in Vinton County. She is my gg-grandmother. Perhaps John GAYNOR is a nephew or younger brother of Mary's. She also had a brother Patrick GAYNOR residing in Vinton County in 1860. Do you have any information about siblings of John's? Do you know the name of the ship that brought them to America?
About 1848 James and wife Mary (GAYNOR) MURPHY sailed from County Kerry, Ireland, poss. Dingle Bay for New York, USA. They had their son Cornelius, 3 years old, with them. Shortly after arriving to New York, Mary gave birth to a son, Patrick MURPHY. Thomas MURPHY was born in Ironton, Ohio the following year. It is believed that Matthew MURPHY was a brother of James and that he arrived in USA earlier and acquired property in Lawrence County, Ohio. He granted James and another brother, Thomas a part of the land according to a land and property deed dated 13 August 1853.

I. James MURPHY married Mary GAYNOR. James was born about 1807. James died around 1859. Mary was born about 1814, according to the census. (However, I am not sure about this date as she is up there in age to be having children in 1845-1853, but it is possible. She would have been 39 when my great-grandfather, Thomas was born.)
1.       Cornelius MURPHY, b. 1845
2.       Patrick MURPHY, b. 1849, in New York, NY
3.       Thomas MURPHY, b March 17, 1853

James and brother, Thomas were Naturalized 4 March 1856 in Lawrence Co., Ohio.
