It would depend on your particular Geddes family.Geddes is not an uncommon name in the Moray region of Scotland and there are many Geddes families in the southern South Island of New Zealand, thanks to heavy Scottish settlement in Otago and Southland in the nineteenth century.
If you know the names of your Geddes ancestors, you might be able to find their details on ships' passenger lists to find their ports of departure and ages at the time.If their departure was after 1941, you may then be able to find details in census records, which recorded people's names from 1841 on and places of birth from 1851.This should also tell you their occupations.
