I found a newspaper article online (through a paid database) about a George Gegner who died in Oskaloosa @ 1898. Can someone tell me something about this George Gegner, his family, etc.? I cut out the first two paragraphs unrelated to George Gegner.
May 19, 1907 Los Angeles Times page V19 Body Buried Over Forty Years Perfectly Preserved- Another Is Petrified ........... ........... At Oskaloosa today, the body of George Gegner, buried 9 years ago, was exhumed and brought to Des Moines. In life, Gegner weighed but a little over 100 pounds. The remains exhumed today weigh a trifle less than a thousand pounds. The corpse appeared to be solid stone. The chemists who examined the remains state that the soil in which the body was buried contained a large amount of alkali which produced the same effect as in the petrified animals found in the Black Hills of the Dakotas.
