Gerrells/Jerrells/Gerls & other Fitzgera
Gerrells, Jerrells, Geralds, Jerrell, and all derivatives of the Fitzgerald line."The (Revolutionary)Soldiers & Sailors of Massachusetts" lists over 50 spellings for Fitzgerald. My line begins with Ebenezer Fitzgerald b 20 May 1779 Trumball, Fairfield, Ct.Family lore as printed in the biography of Ebenezer's granddaughter Helen Gerrells states that our ancestor Fitzgerald/Gerrells escaped from Ireland to France and came to The United States with Lafayette during the Rev War. (No word as to why the escape was necessary, but we do hope it was political). The only Fitzgerald on the Lafayette's ship's docket was a Lt. Eduard Fitzgerald.
Ebenezer had 4 sons. Two of the sons took the spelling of Gerrells and the others spelled the name with a "J"; Jerrells.
As researchers know the spelling depends on the person who could write the name, not necessarily how the name was spelled in recording documents.
All Fitzgerald variations welcome.
