I am a descendant of Gideon Gifford, Jr., who was a brother to your Barnett Gifford.Barnett married Ann Wilmore--do you have the name of Ann's parents?
Barnett and Gideon Gifford, Jr.'s mother was Catherine Slaughter. There is good information on the Slaughter family on the Slaughter Family Genealogy Forum, message #10.
I do not know why Gideon, Sr. was born in N.Y. in 1777 and his brother Joseph was born in PA in 1775.I suspect when we know more about this family, it will become clear. It was not unusual for children in the same family to be born in different places, of course, especially when county and state borders were still changing and families were moving about the country.
I agree that tidbits of information can provide clues to a family.I did not know about Jebez Franklin who married Martha Carman.Thank you for that information.
Jabez Gifford (b. about 1770) is thought to be a brother to Gideon Gifford, Sr., and Joseph Gifford, all of Smith County. Tenn.I spoke to a descendant of Jabez Gifford (through his son Richard) who lives in Trousdale County, Tenn., who told me that Jabez Gifford (b. about 1770) is Jabez Galbraith/Galbreath Gifford.
When I looked for Gifford/Galbraith connections, I found in the Smith County, Tennessee, court minute books, Book 15, 1834-35, that on 2 May 1834, "William Galbraith to George C. Gifford, 100 acres."
I hope someone can tell us about William and Elizabeth Galbraith and how they may be connected to Giffords.
