Gil (Widelka, Poland > Vermont, USA)

Don't know if anyone else is looking for ties to the Gil surname in Widelka, Poland, but this is what I have so far:

Karol Gil -- b 4 November 1879 in Widelka -- came through Ellis Island in June 1904.Son of Sebastian Gil ("an army man") and his wife, Sophia Plizga (no other information). Married on 30 June 1902 in Widelka to Helena Krasia. Helena was born in Widelka on 6 April 1880 to Peter Krasia and Mary Ann Rus. She came through Ellis Island in December 1906.

We've always figured that perhaps the family descended from the Jews who fled Spain during the Spanish Inquisition, but have no proof of that -- just the more Spanish spelling of the last name. The name was later changed however to "Gill" by an Irish elementary school teacher who thought my great-uncle should be "Gill" with two "L's" instead of one...

As for Karol and Helena, they moved to the Rutland, VT area and had nine children.I can provide more information if anyone needs it.
