Re: Edward Gilley & Jane Soper m.1821 in Devon, England
Hi Ann King:
I am Bruce's wife.William GILLEY is my great-great grandfather.
Looking for his birth/christening in the Mormon records (I can't find it, but I can find it for his sisters Jane, Mary, Miriam and Matilda), I discovered there are a lot of William GILLEYs around. My William GILLEY is connected to your Matilda GILLEY because:
1)William GILLEY and his wife Amelia HAWKE named their fourth child, Emma SOPER GILLEY.
2)William GILLEY and Amelia HAWKE's second child was Amelia Hawke GILLEY.Amelia GILLEY named her first child (their grandson) Isaiah SOPER Gilley MOORE.
3)William GILLEY and his wife Amelia HAWKE named their third child, Frances Myriam Hawke GILLEY, the uncommon name Myriam likely being for his younger sister Miriam GILLEY.
4)William GILLEY was a SHOEMAKER like his father Edward GILLEY.
5)William GILLEY's obituary from the Wabash Daily Time-Star says: "The deceased was born in Devonshire, England seventy-eight years ago and removed to Canada, settling near Toronto at an early age.He was married there and continued to live in Toronto until the death of his wife in 1892. Seven years ago he came to Wabash to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Courtier, and has lived here since that time.He was a typical English gentleman and strictly honorable in all of his dealings with his fellowman."
The above obituary gives an approximate birthdate of 1826 and the 1901 American Census says December 1826.However,both the 1871 and 1881 Canadian censuses give an approximate birthdate of 1828.The 1851 English Census gives an approximate birthdate of 1829.And both the 1861 and 1891 Canadian Censuses give an approximate birthdate of 1830.
6) CORDWINDER William GILLEY, born in Lustleigh, Devon shows in the 1851 English Census with parents Jane & Edward GILLEY and sisters Miriam and Matilda. There is NO appropriately aged William GILLEY with the CORDWINDER/SHOEMAKER occupation in subsequent English Censuses, because he was living in Canada.
