Alexander Gillies, the Scots Mad Hatter
Picture it ... Edinburgh, Shoemaker's Land in Canongate. The time is 1841
Alexander, a hatter, was another one of the many Gillies in the clothing business in Edinburgh. He married Agnes (Ann) PARK, a lovely girl from Dalkeith, and there they had children:
George chr 13 Oct 1822
Samuel b 17 Sep 1824, chr 10 Oct 1824
William chr 16 Jul 1826
Alexander b 3 Apr 1828 chr 25 May 1828
Cathrine chr 25 Jul 1830
An afterthought was Ann (1939) whose birthplace is only recorded as Midlothian.
I need any information on Alexander's actual date and place of birth, and his parentage.
I have the family on the 1841 census, living in Shoemaker's Close (Canongate Edinburgh).Young Alexander, a tailor, is in Collierley, Durham in 1861, with 2 nephews and his MOTHER.Catherine may be a servant in Burnopfield in 1851.Ann is a servant in Jarrow, in 1861 and marries Robert Somerville in 1866 in Collierley.
There is an Ann Gillies close to the right age, in 1851 living with a (probably widowed) grandmother, Agnes or Christian Dodds in Society (Abercorn), West Lothian.... but I can't be sure.
If anyone can flesh any of this out, I would surely appreciate it, especially is there is anyone who has access to that 1851 Scottish census. If anyone recognizes any of their own family here and would like any info, just post!
