John Gillies of Ontario Canada, then maybe to San Fran!

I am researching a John Gillies/Gillis born c 1843 in Wellington Co, Ontario Canada to Donald or Donato Gillies and his wife Ellen Joice/Joyce. John married Ann Barton, d/o Abijah Barton and Elizabeth Wright, on 24 March 1870 in Inverhuron, Bruce Co, Ontario Canada. There were at least 4 children born, Allan Donald 1871, Elizabeth "Bessie" 1877, Eleanor Blanche 1881 and Gordon Archie 1883. John was a captain on the Great Lakes for an unknown amount of time and his wife/widow also lived in Kootenay BC and later in life in Seattle, WA. It is unknown what became of John. He may have gone to San Francisco where his son Allan Donald probably lived. His death and burial are unknown.
