Re: Gilligans in Australia
Thank you for your email. The Michael Gilligan that you mention is my great great uncle. He was the ninth child of Michael Gilligan and Jane O'Brien who were the original Gilligans of this family to come to Australia.Michael and Jane came from Mountmellick, County Laois in Ireland.Michael and Jane arrived in Australia on the "Elphinstone" in 1840.
In 2002 we visited Mountmellick but as we were travelling with friends we did not get much time for any research. In the town square there is a monument to eleven Irish rebels who were hung in 1798 for insurrection. One of the rebels was George Gilligan. We suspect that there is a connection between George and Thomas (Thomas was your gggggfather and my ggggfather) but have been unable to prove the connection as almost all of the Irish births, deaths and marriage records were destroyed in the 1922 uprising in Dublin.
Much of the Gilligan family in Australia has been researchedby various family members of the different branches and you are welcome to the information that I have.If you would like me to email you a copy of the "family tree" please email direct on [email protected]
