Martin or Gilmartin name?
I am wondering if anyone can tell me if the Martin name from 1815 out of Co. Cork Ireland ever was a Gilmartin or a Kilmartin and if so when did they drop the first part of that name?
First of all I know that the Martin family came from Ireland but lived in England in 1833 then back to Ireland they went for some strange reason.
Second, the people that I am talking of are John J. Martin and his wife Mary Ellen McKee-Martin. John and Mary Ellen were married at very young ages, or maybe this is a marriage of tribal oathes or bethrothals? And the other thing I was thinking is a marriage between two clans on the opposit sides? HUM. Hard to tell these days that's for sure.
I have found them in Brooklyn, Kings Co. NY in 1860, oldest son Thomas isn't with them but married in 1859 and I can't find him or his wife in the 1860 census, however, they maybe still in NY at that time, their daughter Anna was not born until 1864 at least. Thomas was born in 1833 in Nottingham, Northamptonshire Co. England (states that on his C.W. papers. His marriage to Catharine Marie Kinst is also there and states when he died in 1893.
I am having a hard time placing John and (Mary) Ellen in Ireland and finding a passenger index for them. They both died in Chicago, IL between 1897-1898 and are buried at Mt. Olivet as is their oldest son Thomas and his wife Catharine are. However, both of the oldest children of Thomas and Catharine are also buried there too. Catharine states by the 1900 census that she has had 11 children which only 1 is living, however I have found only 6 children between all the census that I have found for them. Anyone got any ideas as to how I can find the rest of them? There aren't anymore buried in Mt. Olivet or Calvary cemetery either. Have already checked that, so if they were actually births they would have been registered one way or the other (stillborn or not)but miscarriages aren't. So that's what I am thinking at this point.
The Gilmartin and Kilmartin caught my interest seeing as how I can't find John Martin born 11 Mar 1815 County Cork, Ireland anywhere. So if someone has any ideas that would be nice to hear them! Thanks,
