My ancestors were a Robert Bowles family (Irish, Methodist) who first arrived in Quebec City around 1820 but left there after 1854.I found them next in the 1871 Census of Fenelon County,North Victoria District.Robert and family are on page 35 farming at Con. 4 Lot 6.Their name Bowles looks more like Beneles so it took a while to find them but it is them, the parents and all children's names and ages and other details are correct. They now have one more child, Isabella age 13, born in Ontario.Their daughter Caroline (it looks like Carline) is married to James Glaspell nearby at Cons. 6 Lot 8.Their son, my great-grandfather, George Bowles, lives with the Glaspells. In 1873, George will marry Mary Jane Glaspell in Fenelon, Ont. Marriage reg.# 013198.Schedule 6 shows that George Bowles and James Glaspell are carpenters operating a Wagon and Sleigh Shop.Their shop is on 1/2 acre of land where the Wesleyan Methodist Church is also located. However, the family births, marriage and deaths do not appear in Ida Reed's Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Registry.I would expect this church's records to be in there but they don't seem to be.Where are they?
So my main question is when did they arrive in the area? Are there land records which would indicate when Robert bought his land? Are their business records which would tell about the establishment of the Glaspell and Bowles Wagon and Sleigh Shop of 1871? When and where did Caroline Bowles marry James Glaspell (probably in that area)? She is also supposed to have married Thomas Glaspell in Fenelon in 1874 on his deathbed after a timber fell on him while building a barn. She later marriedSamuel Todd in 1877 in Fenelon (Marriage reg. # 010709).So there should be records for both of the Glaspell marriages and for James and Thomas Glaspell's deaths but I can't find them.
Second, where were they in between?I cannot find them in the 1861 census of Fenelon having examined every page.Maybe they were just nearby in a neighbouring county where Isabella was born about 1858 to 1859. The census does say she was born in Ontario. Are there any municipal documents or correspondence preserved which might mention them and where they came from?
Any help or hints towards solving any of this would be much appreciated.
