I am not related to this family and the only research I've done was yesterday when I saw your query and thought I would take a look.
There are a couple of user submitted trees at familysearch.org that state Nancy is the daughter of Willis and Dorcas, but I do not see how that is possible. She was born in IL 2-3 yrs before Willis and Dorcas married in MO.My first thought was that she might be a younger sister of Willis. It is also possible that she is Willis' daughter from a previous marriage. These trees give her the maiden name of GODWIN, THOMPSON as her married name and list her first husband as Benjamin THOMPSON.If they are correct, Nancy is the mother of the other THOMPSON children listed in the 1860 census and she had the eldest when she was only 14.I have to question though, if she was the daughter of Willis or Dorcas, why was she not living with the family in the 1850 census. She would have been only 12.
If Nancy's age is incorrect in the 1860 census, this might be her in 1850 in Cape Girardeau, MO:
THOMPSON, B. F. age 20 b. MO
Nancy age 17 b. IL
Samuel M. age 9/12 b. MO
This would make her a more acceptable age at the birth of Samuel.
Also on the same page is a Benjamin W. THOMPSON, age 34 with Martha, 29 and William, 8.And a third THOMPSON family, Samuel, 42, Amanda, 35, Marzilla, 19, Zacahriah, 16, Demera, 14, Sarah, 12, Mary Jane, 10, William, 7, Missouri, 5, and James, 3.Based on the fact that B.F. and Nancy named their first two children Samuel and Manda, they are probably related to the second family and B.F. is likely their son.
There is one tree that states the father of Willis is either Wilkerson or George GODWIN, but I do not know that person's source for the information:

There's a findagrave entry with obituary for Samuel M. THOMPSON.Unfortunately, it does not mention his parents' names, but does mention half brother W.H. LEWIS and half sister Martha LEWIS.
William Henry LEWIS is buried in the same cemetery.A copy of his death certificate is included with his entry. It states his father was Thomas LEWIS and his mother was unknown:
