I have just started this process so may reveal some weaknesses in my research skills.Nevertheless, I hope someone can point me toward more information on my great grandmother whose name I believe was Mary A. Goodbread Hanson.
We know little because her daughter (my father’s mother) Eva Louise Hanson Waring perished in the 1918 flu epidemic before my father was 2 years old and he was raised by paternal grandparents in Columbia, SC with little or no contact with maternal grandparents.Lucky for me, my father is still alive and interested in the outcome of my research as well.
Anyway - the 1900 census shows Mary A. as wife of Harry H. Hanson on Mason Street, Beverly, Massachusetts. It is my father’s belief that Mary A’s maiden name is Goodbread. The census page shows her birth place (and the birth place of both of her parents) as Georgia.Other data bases show a Mary A. Goodbread from Georgia with a birth year of 1851 (and, interestingly, with spouse George Hanson which is same spelling as Harry’s last name) but the 1900 census clearly shows my great grandmother’s birth date as July 1857 and age as 42 not 48 or 49 which would be true for the other Mary A. Goodbread.
The census data show my great grandmother as the mother of 4 living children but only 2 are listed in the household.Further, the number of years married, 12, makes sense with the age of the two children listed, Lillian F. - 10 and my grandmother, Eva L. - 9 which suggests that my great grandmother had been married before. That seems possible because she is nine years older than her husband.
So – any suggestions that might help would be appreciated.
