I am now looking at a map in Vol. 7 of Will Durant's "The Story of Civilization."
Interestingly enough, and perhaps contrary to what I have seen put forth as fact in this forum regarding the Goode family in Virginia, I find a town named "Whitby" on the northteastern coast of England (North Sea), and not too far to the west a city named "Richmond."
Interestingly enough, both towns are in YORKSHIRE county, rather than Devon as suggested by G.B.Gooode, or Berkshire as the lineage proposed by Dr. Goode would lead us to believe.
Yorkshire county as well as "Whitby" and "Richmond" arequite near Scotland, which corresponds with what I have found in my research, that my ancestors were Scots.
The proof is in the pudding, though, and "Whitby" England, precisely the name John Goode the immigrant gave his homestead, and neighboring Richmond, are neither in Devonshire or Berkshire county.
Perhaps Will Durant's map is wrong, given that the book was published in 1961.My guess is, though, too many of us have been blindly following what has been written by others.
I count myself among that crowd...and welcome feedback.
