About 1858 Hillery M.L. Goode built a house at his plantation in Charlotte County, which I now own.The house has been attributed to Jacob W. Holt, a noted vernacular builder active in Southside Virginia and Warenton, North Carolina. In support of an application to list the property in the National Register, I would like to hear from Goode descendants who may have documents in their possession (letters, invoices, photos, etc.) that could prove a connection with Mr. Holt.
Mr. Goode purchased the property in 1855 but lost it in foreclosure in 1882.Subsequent tax records in Charlotte County indicate that he was living in Tennessee in 1884 and 1885.He died in Lynchburg in 1900.As a side note, I would like to find out why he was in Tennessee, and how he ended up in Lynchburg (which seems somewhat curious, for he served in the Virginia House of Delegates representing Charlotte County from 1878-1881).
Any information would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.
