Since the posting of this, a Cooley researcher looked up the microfilm and LS and found that the witnesses were indeed William and John Cooley. William was the son-in-law of the Major Joseph Gray mentioned.
I'm only now beginning to take a close look at the Goodes. The Goodes and Cooleys lived near one another from at least 1755 (Caroline county VA), through their years in Surry/Stokes county NC and in Lincoln county KY...
-John Cooley and Richard Goode served with Col. Robert Spotswood, 1755. They enlisted at Caroline county, VA.
-John and Richard appear together in several Stokes Coounty NC records.
-John's sons, William and John Coooley, witnessed the 1800 will of John Goode, Richard Goode's first cousin.
-John Cooley had grandson, Timothy Goode Cooley. (It's not clear who "Tink" was named for.)
