A few weeks ago I obtained some documents from the Burwell/Tate family papers donated to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.Included are obituaries for Isabella Goodfellow Burwell (b.8/1/1847-Springfield, OH, d.3/3/98-Gibson City, IL); her husband Moses Thorp Burwell (b.7/16/1844-Delaware Co., OH, d.3/10/1908-Colorado City, CO); their daughter Nettie B. (Mrs. Dr. Gothard Henry) (b. 12/28/1867-IL, d.9/1/1903-Topeka, KS); Isabella's sister Lydia Goodfellow Wilson (b.12/26/1843-Plattsburg, OH, d.12/6/1903-Gibson City, IL); and Lydia's husband, William J. Wilson (b. abt 1839-Clark Co., OH, d.2/15/1903-Hot Springs, Ark.).
Isabella caught pneumonia on the train trip from her home in Kansas City to visit her sister in Gibson City, IL who supposedly was on her death bed.She died unexpectedly at her sister's home after one week. She was such a prominent member of the community that several hundred mourners accompanied her casket to her funeral in Gibson City. The family also had a funeral for her in Kansas City. She was eventually buried in the Burwell family plot in the cemetary in Gibson City. Her husband Moses is buried next to her and Nettie is also buried in the family plot.As far as I can tell Nettie had no children.
Moses and Isabella had six children that lived to adulthood: Nettie, John aka William (my ancestor), Thomas, Moses, Mary Alice and Guy.Two children that died in infancy may have been named Lucy and Lydia.
Lydia's obituary notes that she had been sick for several years. It does not say from what illness she suffered but it says, "she has borne her sufferings so patiently and has been so helpful under all circumstances that she has been a support to her family and has brought good cheer to all who have known her."She had 11 children, 8 of whom were living at the time of her death. They are listed in her husband's obituary as: Mrs. Evan Mattinson, Mrs. Dr. J. E. Ragsdale, Mrs. Dan Meeks, Miss Grace Wilson, Mr. Will Wilson, Miss Mable Wilson, Mr. Glen Wilson and Mrs. Albert Browning.Mr. Wilson's sister was also married to a Goodfellow and is listed as Mrs. John J. Goodfellow of Springfield.
