I just saw your query about John Calvin Goodloe's plantation. This plantation was between Barton and Cherokee in Colbert County, AL.About 15 miles from Tuscumbia, AL.The house was still standing when I was a child in the 1950s.It was a beautiful large Greek revival with large columns in front and an entrance lane lined with beautiful old trees.Unfortunately, it was torn down in the 1950s because it was estimated as too expensive to restore.A new brick home was built on the original foundation of the old mansion.
You are right about Goodloe's civil war sentiments. I have seen the Union records of his giving information to the federals, and that they guarded his house. Not a popular activity in those days, and I have wondered if that might be why he left that beautiful undamaged mansion and moved to Tuscumbia after the war.
