Michael:
Your Gosman surname is likely related to German or Eastern European ancestry. Gossman (in German it could be spelled Goßman, where ß stands for 'ss') and would be a German spelling, but a variation could be Guzman (gooz-man) which might indicate it is ethnic German but based in Ukraine. Russian Empress Catherine the Great, who was of German birth, sponsored Germans to settle on the empty farming land of Ukraine between 1765 and 1795. They stayed there for generations until the Russians in the late 1800's became jealous of their success and incouraged them to leave. Many then departed for North America.
One posting on this forum suggests going to a private website - www.gosman.de - for more information. Put this on GOOGLE and see what happens.
Being so close to NYC, I suggest you contact groups that specialize in American-German or American-Ukrainian family history information. Good luck.
