Tom. I had another look at Gracy trying to get a better understanding of what the Gracy spelling means compared to Gracey and Gracie spellings in different countries.Briefly from scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index , the total no of records available covering 500 years were Gracy 51, Gracey 618, Gracie 5049. I havent got quick figures for Ireland, but it would be Gracey in an overwhelming majority with just some Gracy and even fewer Gracie. Arriving in the states 1892-1924 at Ellis Island USA, Gracy 9, Gracey 111, Gracie 141. In the popularity listings for last names in the USA by PlacedNames Geographic Encyclopaedia is Gracey at 11,543rd, Gracie at 20,870th, and least popular Gracy at 51,583rd.So I would stick my neck out and say Gracy is a rare name in Europe, and unexpectedly uncommon in Scotland, and so very rare indeed.Nowdays in the USA the Gracey spelling appears to be more common than in the whole of europe, so their population has grown well.I am sure the Gracy too have grown well in the USA compared to their smaller population. In Australiathe summary of an incomplete 591 bdm records made up to roughly 1920, divides down to 7 Gracy, 168 Gracey, and 416 Gracie. I dont have Canadian statistics figures as my current energy is focused on my own Gracey family emigrants whom retained that spelling in Canada. Glancing over 3 books that include Gracey trees, ie Skelley, Russell, and Winfree, all three of them have much smaller sections for those connected but spelt Gracy.
So I turn finally to Ancestry.com, one gets matches in their Global databases as follows Gracy 8611, Gracey 14239, Gracie ?????. The databases are heavily weighted towards the USA. I suggest this quantity of matches suggest the Gracy have had social success out of all proportion to their population. I would think this to be an exotic quality rather than racial or religious factor as my present limited understanding of ethnicities thinking. This quality gives them a distinct ethnicities niche in the USA, if I have understand the word correctly. My apologies if I have picked it up wrongly. What do you think? Jim
