Amanda (Mandy) Pinket Payne Grayson????? Loudoun County, Virginia
Pat Duncan,
Thanks to you I believe I am on the right track.
On the 1870 Census Samuel Payne is listed as "Pinket". Amanda Payne is also living in the same place as Samuel Payne with Lewis and Clora E Pinket.
On the 1880 Census Samul. Payne is still living with Louis and Chloe Pinket. He is listed as their grandson. Amanda Payne is not on the 1880 census with them as she is working as a cook living in the home of Joseph and Tamonie Dillon. Amanda is listed as married. I am thinking if Samul. Payne is the grandson of Chloe Pinket and Louis Pinket then Amanda must be their daughter or she may be their former daughter in law???????????
I believe this is the correct Samuel Payne who is married to Lucy Steward Payne and listed on the 1900 Federal Census with Mandy Payne, Thomas Grayson and other family members. By 1910 Samuel Payne is deceased and Lucy Payne is the head. She has a brother living with her named John Stewart. On Samuel and Lucy Steward Payne marriage record Clowe and Louis Pinket are listed as parents and not grandparents for Samuel Payne. Maybe because they raised him as their own he thought of them as his parents.
Amanda's son Thomas is listed as Payne on the 1880 census and Gracon on the 1900 Census and Grayson on the 1910 Census. According to the birth date I believe they are one and the same.
According to the 1900 and 1910 Census Mandy Grayson is listed as having had 12 children. From the information gathered on the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 Census and Loudoun County Vita Records we have 12 children as follow:
1. Roberta Pinket Payne
2. Samuel Pinket Payne
3. Sallie Pinket Payne
4. Ellia Payne
5. Cortna J. Payne
6. Jane Payne
7. Thomas Payne/Grayson
8. Harriet Grayson (Father: James H. Grayson)
9. Harry Grayson
10. Mary Grayson
11. Lilly Grayson
12. Blanche Grayson
All of the children are believed to have been born in Loudoun, Virginia.
I cannot find a death record for Amanda (Mandy) Grayson in D.C. or listed in the Harmony and/or Payne Cemeter in Landover, Maryland.

PAYNE, Cortna J., colored female, b. 30 May 1873 at Garett's Hill House?, Illegitimate, laborer, nr Philomont, mother- Amanda Payne, Informant-father & mother [?]
On the following 1880 Federal Census there is an Amanda Payne with it looks like her son name Thomas Payne living in the home of Tamonie & Joseph Dillon. Amanda was a cook. (Where was her husband was he living in another household working or what?)
It might be that for the 1880 Loudoun Census, Amanda's husband was away on a job on the day the census taker came. One of my ancestor's was visiting her parents on that day so she is listed with them and not her husband.(Pat Duncan)
Also, she is Mullatto. My grandmother, Blanche Grayson, claimed that she was Cherokee and she was not black even tho her skin was dark.
The use of the term mulatto in the census often denoted a skin color more than the race. The census taker could have assumed she was part black based on her skin color.(Pat Duncan)
