Notes for WILLIAM JAMES MCELLHINEY:
The McEllhiney family had a house in at 610 East State St. in Princeton, IN and a farm outside of town. William and sons Joe and Ross worked together as W. J. McEllhiney & Sons, threshing wheat and other grains such as oats, barley, and cowpeas for themselves and neighbors in their Fairview community. Individual farmers would cut and shock their own wheat, but threshing required much more labor so it was a community affair. Threshing season lasted about three to four weeks. "Rings were formed which consisted of all the farmers (eight to ten) who contracted with a given threshing machine operator. Members of the ring would move from farm to farm bringing their horses and wagons, their pitchforks, and their labor; so, day after day, the same crew was on the job becoming more efficient as the days passed by." In the last two weeks in August when the McLaughlins visited, they would live down in the basement during the days to keep cool. Zelissa always made ice tea and had plenty of ice water in the refrigerator. Granddaughter Joan remembers that they kept their false teeth in a jar on the shelf. Zelissa was a tall, slim quiet woman who enjoyed quilting. William was very domineering and funny. He believed there were only three worthwhile professions: medicine, teaching, and farming.
