Jeanne,

You could start with this website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~greenefamily/genealogy/greenfamily/Greenfamily.htmlhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~greenefamily/genealogy/greenfamily/Greenfamily.html

General Nathanael Greene's son Nathanael Ray Greene had two sons, no daughters. One son Nathanael did not have any children. The second son, George Washington Greenehad three dau and two sons.

Louise Brownell Clarke, "The Greenes of Rhode Island" has the general's ancestry and descendants. I have the general's Perry ancestry and his descendants in my book "Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene with Allied Families." You can find a list of libraries with my book at http://users.hal-pc.org/~wmewrght/library.htmlhttp://users.hal-pc.org/~wmewrght/library.html

The first step in tracing your ancestry is to ask ALL your living relatives what they know. You can get birth, death, and marriage certificates for those who lived in the last 120 years or so and often times earlier. But you need to work backwards one generation at a time. Prove the information you get from valid sources and keep a record of where you got the information.

There is usually an element of truth in family traditions, but it is often distorted with generations of retelling. My family had a tradition of relationship to General Greene. The basis of that tradition turned out to be we descended from a Greene family in Rhode Island where the general was born. But it was a completely separate line of Greenes that were not related to the general.
