We have spent a little more time this summer trying to further research our earlier findings this past Spring, however, we believe now that there are not any other sources in Onondaga to be had.=)Looks like we are going to have to move on to other areas in the future, but here are our latest findings.

We found an 1832/5 newspaper article stating that "John Greene is the son of Christopher Greene, of Revolutionary memory."

After searching for soldiers of the Revolutionary War, the only Christopher Greene found was a Revolutionary War Hero who was brutally murdered at Red Bank by a band of Tory rebels, in retaliation for leading the first regiment of black soldiers against the crown. He has a monument in New Jersey and Congress awarded a sword to him for his heroic defense of Ft. Mercer against unreasonable odds, an event lauded by his cousin the General Nathaniel Greene and General George Washington.

Col. Christopher Greene’s children are fairly well documented, as would be expected of a war hero and cousin of Nathanael Greene: there is NO John among them. Unless dates and birthplaces of the Colonel’s other children are wrong, a highly unlikely scenario for such an historical figure, there is no logical way for our John to fit.

However, there is a Christopher Greene born in 1735, son of John and grandson of William Green, all who were from Preston, Connecticut, who fit the time frame for our John Green. John says in his Pension application that he was born in Preston, Connecticut.

This must all be thoroughly researched out, as it would upset the best conjectures of the last hundred years. This Christopher does not fit the description of Joel’s biography, but it wouldn’t be the first time a family tradition proved false.

Good Luck in your research...
