Greeney family from 1820
I'm working on a GREENEY family line and have traced it to JOHN GREENEY born 1820 in Missouri.
Family lore indicates current GREENEY family had an ancestor of French heritage that worked as a fur trapper or fur trader.
John GREENEY, according to census data, was born about 1820 in "Missouri".He married Sarah "Lockler" LOCKLEAR in Williamson County, Illinois in 1844.
Reportedly this branch of the GREENEY family came from Europe via Louisiana - but it was likely a territory then so the borders were very different.A related GREENEY branch arrived via Canada.
There is a Peter GREENEY owning land in Knox County Illinois (county borders were very different then)- it is unknown if he is related.
Greeney is likely an English spelling derived from GRENIER or similar French spelling.
The males (and possibly some females) of this branch have a characteristic CLEFT CHIN.Photos available.
