Hi Erin:Thanks for responding to me so quickly.I've recently "re-introduced" myself with the family genealogy, along with my father, and had stumbled on the controversy regarding the two Sarah's (Dole and Moore). However, your forum posts (along with others) seem to indicate there is controversy regarding two Edmunds as well. Here are the facts as I know them so far:
1 - An Edmund was born ca 1573-4 in England to John and Mary - My parents went to Mary le Tour some years ago, and the "keeper" there said that the record that appeared to be for Edmund and 1574 was in fact not Edmund.Apparently, the handwriting at that time was not too clear by today's standards; she claimed to be an authority, and said it wasn't Edmund. She did not know what name it actually spelled. So, without actually seeing this record myself, I would question if it has actually been established that an Edmund was born in 1573,4.
2 - According to James Greenleaf's 1896 genealogy, baptismal records for nine of an Edmund's children can be found at Mary Le Tour, and they were all born in England. The names include (in chronological order):
Enoch, b 1613, Samuel, Enoch, Sarah, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Judith, Stephen, Daniel, bap 1631.There may have been a John and Mary born after 1632, but this is not certain.
3 - An Edmund settled in Newbury, with the first settlers, in 1635.He had a wife named Sarah ______, according to the History of Newbury Massachusetts.
4 - This same Edmund moved to Boston with his wife Sarah in 1650, according to the New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
5 - Sarah died in Boston, as did this Edmund in 1671.
6 - This Edmund wrote a will in 1668.The will is in the Probate Records of Boston. In it, mention is made of the following children (in order of mention): Stephen, Elizabeth (Browne), Judith (Coffin). He outlived Enoch (the first), Samuel, Sarah, Nathaniel, Daniel. He left nothing to his son Enoch (the second), but included Enoch's son James in his will.
7 - At the time of his 1671 death, he was married to a Sarah Jurdaine Wilson Hill (his second wife), as her son's last name of Hill is mentioned (but not hers).
8 - A "memorial stone" can be found in the first settlers cemetary in Newbury, but this does not actually indicate that Edmund was buried there, as he died in Boston.
Summary:An Edmund "may" have been born about 1573,4 in England.Had first child at age 40, last at age 59, with wife Sarah ____.Moved to Newbury at age 62, and served in the militia until after age 70.Wife died in 1663, remarried Sarah Hill.Died in Boston at age 97.Of course, these ages seem a bit incongruous; enter the "two Edmund" scenario. Also, the name of a Sarah Dole and a Sarah Moore seem to both appear in the records. With your "two Edmund" scenario, we find the first Edmund marrying perhaps Elizabeth Leeds, then perhaps Sarah Dole, and the Second Edmund marrying Sarah Moore in 1611, and then Sarah Hill.
What's clearly established is that an Edmund was among the original settlers of Newbury, died in 1671, and had at least the children mentioned in his will (Stephen being my line). This same Edmund clearly had the additional children listed in James' genealogy, since their baptismal records are on file in England, and the names coincide with those in the will. What's not clear is the line prior to this 1671 Edmund; i.e. is he the son of John, or the son of another Edmund?
Questions:
1: Have you seen the 1574 baptismal record, and was it clearly for an Edmund?
2. Have you seen any of the baptismal records for the nine children, as they may list Sarah's last (maiden) name?
2. What proof is there that an Edmund married Elizabeth Leeds, and that this Edmund was the father of the 1671 Edmund?
3. What documentation was found that leads to the 1611 conclusion of a marrage to Sarah Moore?
4. Do you know where Edmund (either one) was buried?
5. Where does Sarah Dole fit into all this?
Alot to read, I know. But I wanted to put down all that I know for future reference on my part.Any help in any of this would be appreciated.I'll also post on the website, in case anyone else is still "listening".
Thanks alot!
Mark Greenleaf
