Hester Griswold & Nathan Bradley & his other 2 wives & 38 children

By Linda Cox December 11, 2006 at 08:34:03

This is what I have been able to gather. I hope that it is correct:

Nathan Bradley and the confusion of children from his three marriages:

Nathan Bradley b. 1638 in Bingley, Yorkshire, England married
Hester Griswold b. 8 May 1648 in Wethersfield Twp, Hartford County, Connecticut
Married: 16 Oct 1652 (she would have been 4 years old. Her first known child was born in 1669, so they probably married a year or so before that).
Hester had 8 children in 19 years:

1.       Anna BRADLEY b: 10 Jan 1669 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 79)
2.       Mary BRADLEY b: 13 Mar 1672 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 24)
3.       Abigail BRADLEY b: 13 Mar 1672 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 73)
4.       Hester BRADLEY b: 2 Nov 1674 in Guilford,N Haven,CT
5.       Hester BRADLEY b: 14 Apr 1677 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 15 months)
6.       Daniel BRADLEY b: 10 Jun 1680 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 7))
7.       Nathan Noah BRADLEY b: 18 Sep 1685 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 25)
8.       Patience Bradley b. 6 APR 1688 in Guilford,N Haven,CT (d. Age 55)

Hester Griswold Bradley died November 30, 1695 (probably sooner than that – that’s the date Hannah Munson Tuttle Bradley, his next wife died and he married Hannah Munson Tuttle in 1694, so let’s say Hester Griswold Bradley died in 1694)

Hester’s children (assuming that they all lived) would have been at her death aged:
25, 22, 22, 20 (died young), 17 (died young), 14, 9, 6

Joseph Tuttle b. 1638 in BOSTON, MA, son of William and Elizabeth Tuttle, married Hannah Munson, daughter of Thomas Munson, May 2, 1667. Joseph died SEP 1690 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. (Joseph Tuttle was the same age as Nathan Bradley - Hannah Munson Tuttle afterwards married Nathan Bradley 1694 in NEW HAVEN, CONN)

Hannah Munson b. 11 JUN 1648 in NEW HAVEN, CONN = she was the same age as Hester Griswold Bradley.
Hannah was married to Tuttle 2 May 1667 in New Haven, New Haven, Ct –
Married 1667 to 1690 – when Joseph Tuttle died; she was then a widow for about 4 years - until 1694 when she married Nathan Bradley, he a widower with 8 children, 6 living.
Between 1668 and 1685, Hannah had 14 children – in 17 years:

1.       Joseph TUTTLE b: 18 Mar 1667/1668 in Of,New Haven,New Haven,Connecticut
2.       Hannah TUTTLE b: Abt 1670 in Milford,New Haven,Ct
3.       Samuel TUTTLE b: 15 Jul 1670 in Milford,New Haven,Connecticut
4.       Stephen TUTTLE b: 20 May 1673 in Milford,New Haven,Connecticut
5.       Johanna TUTTLE b: 13 Dec 1675 in Milford,New Haven,Connecticut
6.       (Infant) TUTTLE b: Abt 1677 in
7.       Timothy TUTTLE b: 30 Sep 1678 in New Haven,New Haven,Connecticut
8.       Elizabeth TUTTLE b: 12 Jul 1683 in Milford,New Haven,Connecticut
9.       (Infant) TUTTLE b: Abt 1685 in
10.       Hannah TUTTLE b: 14 May 1685 in Milford,New Haven,Ct
11.       Hannah TUTTLE b: 26 Feb 1688/1689 in Milford,New Haven,Connecticut
12.       Susanna TUTTLE b: 20 Feb 1679/1680 in New Haven,New Haven,CT
13.       (Infant) TUTTLE b: Abt 1677 in
14.       (Infant) TUTTLE b: Abt 1685 in

In 1690 when Joseph Tuttle died his surviving children would have been:
22, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10, 7, 5

Hannah Munson Tuttle and Nathan Bradley married 1694 in NEW HAVEN, CONN – they had a total of 22 children, living or dead, between them.

Hannah’s children would have been 26, 24, 21, 19, 16, 14, 11, 9
Hester’s children would have been at her death aged:
25, 22, 22, 20 (died young), 17 (died young), 14, 9, 6
This means that there would have been at the Nathan Bradley home perhaps at least 5 or 6 young children.

Hannah died 30 NOV 1695 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut, leaving Nathan with 5 or 6 children (unless some other relative of Hannah or Thomas Tuttle took the Tuttle children in).

Nathan third married Rachel Holton b. 1645 in Hartford, Hartford, CT (she was 7 years younger than Hester and Hannah), widow of Thomas Strong.

Thomas Strong born 26 OCT 1633 (he was 5 years older than the other two men), had been previously married 5 DEC 1660 to Mary Hewitt (that was about 7 or 8 years before the other ladies got married the first time) and had 5 children by Mary Hewitt Strong:

1.       Thomas Strong b: 16 NOV 1661 in Of Northampton, Hampshire County, MA
2.       Maria STRONG b: 31 AUG 1663 in Northampton, Hampshire County, MA
3.       John STRONG b: 03 MAR 1664 in Northampton, Hampshire County, MA
4.       Hewett STRONG b: 02 DEC 1666 in Northampton, Hampshire County, MA
5.       Asahel STRONG b: 14 NOV 1668 in Northampton, Hampshire County, MA

Mary Hewitt Strong died 20 FEB 1671.

Thomas Strong and Rachel Holton married 10 OCT 1671 (about 4 years after the other two marriages occurred – Bradley/Griswold and Tuttle/Munson.)

The children of Thomas Strong and Mary Hewitt Strong would have been close in age when Thomas Strong married Rachel Holton: 10, 8, 7, 5, 3

Rachel Holton and Thomas Strong had 11 children:

1.       Justice Joseph STRONG b: 2 Dec 1672 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
2.       Benjamin STRONG b: 2 Dec 1674 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
3.       Adino STRONG b: 25 Jan 1676 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
4.       Waitstill STRONG b: 1677 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
5.       Rachel STRONG b: 15 Jul 1679 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
6.       Selah STRONG b: 23 Dec 1680 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
7.       Benajah STRONG b: 24 Sep 1682 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
8.       Ephraim STRONG b: 4 Jan 1685 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
9.       Elnathan STRONG b: 20 Aug 1686 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA
10.       Ruth STRONG b: 4 Feb 1688 in Kampton, Windham, CT
11.       Submit STRONG b: 23 Feb 1690 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA

Thomas Strong died OCT 1689 – when he died the children and they had were ages:
17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 9, 7, 4, 3, 1 and Rachel was pregnant.

(Mary Hewitt and Thomas Strong’s children would have been grown and gone – ages then: 28, 26, 25, 23).

Rachel Holton Strong then married Nathan Bradley, a double widower, 16 May 1698 Northampton, Massachusetts.

Rachel Holton Strong’s children would have been: 26, 24, 22, 21, 19, 16, 13, 12, 10, 9
Nathan Bradley’s children by Hester Griswold would have been aged:
29, 26, 26, 24 (died young), 21 (died young), 18, 13, 10
Hannah Munson Tuttle’s children, if Nathan Bradley kept them, would have been aged:30, 28, 25, 23, 20, 18, 15, 9
That means that there may have been 7 children under the age of 15

This means that there would have been 38 children in Nathan’s life if all step children are included (living or dead, home or gone).

Nathan Bradley died March 10, 1712/13 in rd, New Haven, CT – the children, including those from previous marriages would have all been grown except:

Patience Bradley would have been 13 should she have been born in 1688 – some records say she was born in 1698, making her 3 and the daughter of Rachel – Patience married first DANIEL CRITTENDEN b: 27 May 1696 in GUILFORD, NEW HAVEN CT. Abt 1718 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut making it impossible for her to have been born in 1688, so she most likely was age 3).

Rachel Holton Strong Bradley died 1714 Massachusetts. Patience would have been 15 or most likely age 5.
