The 1850, 60, and 70 Orland, Hancock, Maine Census show Rufus Gross, mariner, wife, Elvina, and children:
Edwin, Walter D., Phenias A., Loring H. or Loving H. (male), Mria E., Ida/Ada A., and Ella F.
On the 1850 Census Rufus, Elvina, Edwin, Walter and Phenias live immediately next door to (or possibly in the same house as) john Gross, then shown as 31, with wife, Augusta, 25, Ephraim, 6, Arthur, 5, John, 2, and Laura/Louisa, 3 mos.Sorry about not being positive of the names, the writing left a great deal to be desired.
Furthermore, I am 98% sure that Rufus is brother to John as well as to Nathan Gross, b. abt. 1814.Nathan and wife, Nancy, had Leonard, Rufus, and Charles, b. 1841, 45, and 48 respectively, all in Orland, Hancock, ME.
Rufus was dead before 1880 when the family shows up with Elvina as the head and living in Greenbush, Rensselaer, NY. The writing is deplorable and I cannot make out some of the names.A man reported to be a son-in-law is shown as R. S. Atteston, b. Maine, with son, Gary, age 8 listed as grandson.Another son-in-law, the line I am following, is George Elston, 29, married to Ada who was shown as Ida as a child, age 23, with their son, George, 2 most, b. Nov 1879, Greenbush.Daughter of Elvina, Maria, is shown with a last name that is impossible to read but looks like Descrourtse or Dedcourtah or Dedcourtal... I've tried everything and nothing seems to work even using soundex which brings up tons of Dougherty's and I do not believe that is it.A child listed as male, aged 1 is shown, but the writing appears to show the child as GRACE... suppose it could be Wade...This child is Maria's.
In 1930, Albany, Albany, NY the census shows George E. Elston, b. 1879, as a shipper, A&R Co., with wife Eleanor, clerk, tax department with son, Frederick G., mail carrier, age 26.
Would appreciate any information on this family. What I have given is all I have.Just discovered this branch in Jan 2005.New e-mail [email protected]
