Grow - Australia
Christian Grau and Johanne MEISSNER
The name was changed to Grow very early after this family's arrival in Australia
GRAU Christian c.1813 m. Johanne MEISSNER pre1840 Christian GROW and his wife Johanne MEISSNER, left their home in Lautental, in the Harz Mountains of Germanyin 1848The ship ‘GeorgeWashington’ left Bremerhaven on October 25, 1848and arrived in Adelaide on March 2, 1849.
Sadly Johanne died aboard ship on the trip to Australia, leaving Christian to cope with one two year old boy and three daughters, 4, 6 and 8 ref.SAGHS Immigrants from the Harz Mtns Germany)
Christian died in Burra in 1881(Index cards held at the South Australian Genealogy Society has Johanne's death as 15 Oct 1848 at sea but the ship did not leave port until the 25th Oct)(It always pays to check records as they vary so much)
Julihanne
Sophia
Caroline
Louis – my g-grandfather
Other Meissner’s arrived around the same time but declare they have no knowledge of Johanne. I would appear that at some time Julihanne (Julie spent some time with the other Meissners who lived in Hahndorf –details I have not established
By the 1850’s they were settled in Bridge St, Kooringa, Burra where my grand mother and my mother were born.
Son Louis had a carting business and Charles ran a taxi service.
A Mr Meissner of Germany confirmed the births for me ( he approached the church in Lautental) but I did no more as research there is very expensive
Thanks,
Jenny
