You're right.It's intriguing and a bit puzzling.I'm afraid I don't have more information though....
But children were viewed differently at different times in the past.I suspect the Golledges were poor, but much later (19th century) the children of fairly affluent British families whose fathers were abroad on business - perhaps in the Indian Civil Service - would be shipped back to England to boarding school at the age of 7, and might not see their parents for years at a time.Not the same thing, I know, but indicative of different attitudes.
