Now I find out I'm a Gulliford!
I have just found out that my surname should not be Brake, but Gulliford.
Both names are apparently common to Sommerset.
The story goes that Elizabeth Bissex married a Brake, who died before they had children.
Elizabeth then took up with John Gulliford and had Thomas Abraham, Harry, and Mercy, out of wedlock.
Apparently they married at the same time as Thomas, in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire in 1885.
Thomas Abraham [Brake], born 1866, was my great grand-father, his son (same name), my grandfather, and his son [Stephen] Ambrose Edward [Brake], my father. My father emigrted to Austalia around 1952.
If anyone can shed more light on this I would appreciate it.
Thankyou, Peter [Brake] Gulliford
