I have been trawling through all the messages on the Gum Family genealogy and have noticed that no one has used DNA to assist them. I have traced my family back to Roger Gum born 1720 Seend, Wiltshire, England, and there I have ground to a halt. Recently, I have used a 33 marker Y- Chromosome test and found I belong to the haplogroup I1a. This group is thought to be associated with the Vikings of Scandinavia which came as somewhat of a surprise to me. The closest match that I have found to my own DNA is from a Jason Robert Gum who lives in one of the eastern States of the USA. He thinks that his earliest ancestor is a Roger Gum born in 1645 in England married to a Mathilda Holcombe. These names appear in the LDS IGI but there is very little information about them. I would like to ask:- 1. Has anyone in the Gum(m) family done a Y Chromosome test and if so, with what results? 2. Has anyone in the USA traced their ancestors back to immigrants from the UK and do they have any knowledge of this Roger Gum?
