Re: Gunckel in Germany
I have sketchy information about my great-grandparents.I haven't followed up throroughly with the record-keeping agencies, but I have tried online searches to no avail.
According to family lore, my great-grandfather was Karl Gunckel from Kassel, Germany. He traveled back and forth from Germany to Minnesota several times, presumably in the 1880's.He finally brought his family over (wife -- Lizzie Klause, children Dora and Elsie), and settled in Indiannapolis, Indiana, where my grandfather was born (Ferdinand Charles Gunckel, b. March 22, 1893, d.Feb. 9, 1979).
According to the family story, Karl was killed when he was hit by a train, although I sometimes wonder if he might have abandoned the family. We have a mangled pocket watch as an heirloom, and we always assumed it was his, mangled in the accident.
After the accident, the family relocated to Atlanta, GA., where I live today.
If you know of any records that document Karl Gunckel or Lizzie Klause from the Kassel, Germany vicinity I would appreciate hearing from you.I have some birth and confirmation records for my grandfather, but the story stops with Karl and Lizzie.
