Myrtle B. Jettner, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and friend, has gone to join the Lord on Saturday April 16, 2005.

She was born on February 23, 1918, in Seattle, Washington. She was the fourth child born to Walter and Leitha (Lawson) Yocum.

She spent her formative years in and around the logging camps of Merry Weather, Michigan and Orlander, Wisconsin, where her father was a lumberjack. They became a loving large family with twelve children. At her mothers side she learned extraordinary culinary skills as well as quilt making and all forms of fancy needlework. Her home was a family gathering place all of her life where these skills were put to wonderful use.

She married William (Bill) Hackworth in 1934 and they were blessed with four children, three daughters and one son.

During W W II they took their children and joined her family in Seattle where she became one of the many women to step forward and serve our country. She became a welder in the shipyards, being small in stature and unafraid of heights she became a valued employee. She could get into tight small areas to weld where many could not. She went on to become an instructor and taught numerous women to also become welders. She received certification as a welder from both the State of Washington as well as the State of Michigan. Her framed certificates were a treasure to her and the other women in the country who received them.

Upon their return to Michigan she became a welding instructor for Allen Industries. After the war and several years of staying home as a homemaker she returned to the work force working for the Kellogg Company, where she worked in the packing department from 1948 until her retirement in 1976.

She met and married Robert Jettner while employed at Kellogg’s. Upon retirement they moved to Seattle where all of her family resides.

She was a member of the Kellogg Twenty-Five Year Club, The Eastern Star, the Saint Mary’s Lake Snowmobile Club, the First Shift Birthday Club and First Shift Golf League where she made a hole-in-one. She also served as a den mother for her son’s scout troop.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Renton, Washington. She was an avid quilt maker blessing each child and grandchild with a beautiful quilt. She made many that were auctioned by her church as fundraisers for the women’s circles. They were truly gifts of love to all who received one.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands William Hackworth and Robert Jettner, a daughter, Norma Fay Hackworth, two grandchildren, James Hearn and Vickey (Hearn) Avella, three brothers, Glen, Omer and Raymond Yocum and one sister, Audrey Yocum.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Lansdon of Sparks, Nevada and Beverly (Gary) Teegardin of Hastings, Michigan, and son, James (Karen) Hackworth of Issaquah, Washington. Two step-daughters, Shirley (Norman) Dudzik of Long Beach, California and Dianna (Roger) Moore of Florida, and stepson, Gary Jettner of Cincinnati, Ohio. Five sisters, Beatrice (Myrt) Dickerson, Eitha Yocum, Gerie (Al) Turay, Jimmie Breeze and Jackie (Richard) Case. Two brothers, Walter (Velma) Yocum and Ralph Yocum all of whom reside in Seattle, Washington. Six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Garrison of the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Interment in Reese Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Hastings Presbyterian Church or Barry County Hospice.
