Parents of Washington Vance born abt 1815 NPE RE: Brice Hale and Peter Hale
NOTE TO THE FRANCIS FAMILY:
I need your help in identifying the Elizabeth Francis 26-45 (page 42 of the 1820 Floyd Co Census) This may be Elizabeth Roberts that married William Francis in 1809 Floyd Co, KY. If this is she, Elizabith Roberts Francis, then William is a good candidate as my 3rd great grandfather.
I also need your help in identiying thelarge Thomas Francis family, husband and wife 26-45 (page 43 of the 1820 Floyd Co Census)
From my research, I understand the difficulty in identifying many of the Franciss of this area and era. Any analysis is appreciated.
NOTE TO THE HALE FAMILY:
A few researchers have determined that Brice Hale that married Mary Polly Wilson Vance is the son of Peter, while most think Benjamin.Your help in this question after considering my story is appreciated.
WASHINGTON VANCE born abt 1815 Floyd Co Ky or Russell Co Va
My great great grandfather Washington Vance is not a Vance.Family myth has his original name as Jacobs, which was passed down by my grandfather many years ago. The ancestry shown for Washington is speculative, but considering my close DNA match to the Francis, Jacobs and Hammond families, the overwhelming evidence as to the closeness of these families, including the Hales, in the 1820 Floyd County Census, and of course the information related by my grandfather, leads me to the almost surety of identyifing the parents of Washington Vance. At least to determine their surnames and Washington's father or grandfather to be Rowland/Roley Jacobs. (more likely grandfather).
My 66/67Y match to the Francis family leads me to believe that my 3rd great grandfather is possibly William H Francis 1795-1880, possible son of Thomas Francis and Jane Hammon(d)s. I am an 11/12Y match with the Hammonds family.
My 12/12 match to the Jacobs family leads me to believe that my 3rd great grandmother was the daughter of Roley/Rowland Jacobs.(see 1820 FLOYD COUNTY CENSUS below) Washington Vance would name his first son Roland, which in turn would also name his first son Roland. Roley/Rowland Jacobs died in 1825 and his wife Millian Anne (Matilda) Carter, by some accounts is recorded to have died in 1818. Record of two or three of Roland Jacob's daughters is very sketchyand there are no known children.
It appears that Washington, was a young adult in the John Vance and Hannah Radar family per the 1830-37 Logan Co Tax Records.
John Vance, the son of Abner Vance and Susannah Howard, had custody battles with his first wife Mary Wilson over children William and Susannah. William is not in the 1830-37 Logan Co Tax Records and appears in Logan Co for the first time in the 1850 census as a neighbor to his father John.Susannah married Squire Ellis and lived in Logan Co. Both William and Susannah are probably the children with John Vance in the 1820 and 1830 Logan Co Census. There are four boys with John in the 1830 census and John had only three documented sons, with the fourth boy being our Washington.
Mary Wilson Polly Vance would marry Brice Hale in 1826, Floyd Co Ky.
1820 FLOYD COUNTY CENSUS
Roley Jacobs born abt 1753, is found in the 1820 Floyd Co Census living close to Zachariah Hale,(Page 38) brother or cousin of Brice Hale.In that 1820 census Roley Jacobs is living with a woman greater than 45, with 2 boys less than 10, 2 girls less than 10 and 1 boy 10-15.I believe that our Washington is one of these boys.
Claudius, John and William Jacobs are found as neighbors to Peter and Joseph Hale. (Page 41) Peter Hale is recorded by some as the father of Brice Hale, though others have his father as Benjamin. As mentioned before, Brice would marry, the first wife of John Vance, Mary Polly Wilson Vance in 1826, Floyd Co, Ky.
Elizabeth Francis, (divorcee?) of William H Francis is found with young children on (Page 42). Is this the Eliabeth Roberts that married William Francis in 1809, Floyd Co, Ky.A William Francis would go on to raise a family with Delilah Quillen, in Pike Co.If this Elizabeth is Elizabeth Roberts then William is a likely canidate as my 3rd great grandfather,
Thomas Francis is found with his large family on (Page 43).Are they to young to be the Thomas Francis that married Jane Hammons? They certainly have a large family.
FAMILY RELATIONS
In all probablility, the Vances, Jacobs, Hales, and Francis families knew each other, or knew of each other as they traveled from Russell County, VA to Floyd Co, KY and Logan Co, VA.John probably visited his first wife Mary Wilson in 1825, to grant her a divorce as she married Brice Hale in 1826. John, after the death of Roley Jacobs in 1825, encountered Washington and took the child in.
As I contact my DNA matchs, more information should be forthcoming.
