Mary Fowler,

I believe we are cousins.I tried to send this message to you earlier this a.m. but lost it, at least I think I did. If not, here it is again.

My ggrandfather's name was Green Berry Haley who was born in Sangamon County, IL on 16 Nov, 1851.He had a brother named William H.Haley, born in Rockcastle County, KY on 15 March 1835.William enlisted in the Union Army in Company F, Merrill's Horse from Missouri on 18 August, 1862.He later married Malinda Cleveland (sp?) on 24 December 1868.They had two sons, Hamilton Ohio Haley, born c.1870 and Cleveland H. Haley, born c. 1872.Malinda died when Cleveland was only 8 months old.Later census records show that Hamilton never remarried.I don't know what Malinda died from, nor where she is buried.

Green Berry Haley was William's brother.Their parents were Hamilton Haley and Rhoda (McCallister) Haley. They had more children than Green Berry and William, however, not certain yet who.

The 1850 census for Sangamon County, IL lists William Haley, then 16 years old, living with a family named Matthews.William was listed as a laborer. However, the same census records do not show Hamilton Haley. This was the year before GB was born.I am puzzled by this.

Green Berry Haley (my ggrandfather) moved to Lucas County, Iowa where he later married a young woman, Martha Elizabeth Nicholson (spelling varies) on 13 Oct, 1882.Her family lived in Warren County at the time and GB lived in Ottercreek of Lucas County, IA.GB and Martha had 10 children:

Sarah Emaline Haley, born 9 Aug,1884, and died ? April, 1917; Della Gertrude Haley (nn: Dollie) born 26 Jan, 1885, married someone named Elisha B. Fowler on 20 Sept, 1903 and died in 1926; Rhoda Frances Haley born 1 July, 1886 and died in 1966; Manda Jane Haley born 13 May, 1888 and died 6 Oct, 1937; John Hamilton Haley born 17 Aug, 1890 and died 4 Oct, 1961; Mary Eleanor Haley (nn:Mae) born 11 October, 1892 and moved with husband to Seattle, WA; William Elmer Haley born 13 Dec, 1896 and died in 1970's (?); Maudie Viola Haley born 23 Mar, 1900 and married Glen Burgett, they had 5 children, Roy (nn:Brother), Martha Mae, George who died from pneumonia at the age of 17 after shoveling snow in a blizzard, and Freddie -- don't know the other kids names, Aunt Maudie died in the 1970's; Beulah Ann Haley (my grandmother) born 10 Jun, 1903 and died 23 December, 1976.She had two daughters out of wedlock, Helen who was left in an orphanage for a number of years and my mother Marjorie Marie (Emery).

I remember going to visit your relatives in Cedar Rapids.A man named Jim Fowler and a woman named Gladys something, both I believe were my grandmother's cousins.I also vaguely remember going along with my grandparents, Beulah and Bill Diercksen, to take my sister, Chris, to stay with someone related to Gladys. My sister got to spend a week there and I remember she got to go horseback riding, something she really loved to do.I was only a little girl at the time.I also vaguely remember something about two girls who were identical twins that were between my sister and me in age.

I believe that Sarah Haley, Della Haley, and Manda Jane are buried in Des Moines at the Glendale Cemetary on University Ave. because I went often as a child with my grandparents to that cemetary and my grandmother would look at the headstones and tell me family history.Unfortunately, being only a kid, I didn't understand the importance of what she was sharing.I miss her so much and have so many questions. My mother died 9 Sept, 1991 and I have such a burning desire to know where I came from.

Anyway, I have more info if you would like it because I've been searching this stuff for a little while, but have only recently searched the internet and one day I hit the Jackpot!I believe I found info that traces our family roots back to Virginia in the 1600's.

Hope to hear from you soon
Happy Hunting, Sue

P.S. Since I'm not very good at using the internet, yet, I may never find this website again. To discuss further info, please send me by email to [email protected]
