Thomas Halfpenny, Tipperary - Van Diemans Land

By sharyn watson December 04, 2012 at 07:57:00

I am researching Thomas Halfpenny, born C 1801 in (I assume) Tipperary, Ireland. He was convicted for stealing 2 yards of cloth and transported to VDL for 7 years in 1841 aboard the Richard Webb.

His wife Mary born C 1811(maiden name unknown) was also convicted of theft of cashmere in 1841 and transported aboard the Hope to VDL. Traveling with her were their five daughters, Joanna b 1830, Ellen b 1833, Margaret b 1836, Mary b 1838 and Catherine b 1840. The girls were inmates of Queen's Orphanage in Hobart upon their arrival. I believe there was also another daughter who stayed behind in Ireland, although I am not sure if she was an older girl or an infant.

Both Thomas and Mary's convictions were recorded in County Tipperary.

Please contact me if you believe you are researching the same family. Cheers, Sharon
